Lazy days

And sunny days! We finally have some sunshine here, just in time for the summer holidays. So lots of days on the beach ahead which is fab, but having my lovely girls to entertain all day does does not do great things for my work rate!

However, I do have two lovely little girls of the doll variety all ready to go here for you all. And with cool summery clothes just right for this weather.

I’ve had fun going a bit more organic this time. I do use organic fabrics regularly but this time I have created a doll with all organic clothing and she also has hair made from natural undyed yarn, which is just beautiful – I hope you are as happy as I am with the results!

So firstly Susie, a 16″ waldorf inspired doll.

I took inspiration for her outfit from the picture of the three cotton spools that I posted last time – so the orange is not quite so vibrant, but the essence is there I feel.

Susie’s hair is the Jamieson and Smith Shetland yarn, this time blonde, with a cute little fringe.

Her clothes are an organic dress and trousers and a patterned pinny. The dress is pale ivory and has a beautiful embroidered design and the trousers a slightly heavier rust coloured crossweave fabric. Her pinny is a gorgeous retro flower pattern from the Windham Feedsack collection.

And now Lulu another 16″ doll.

I’ve tried to go as natural as possible this time.

Lulu’s hair is again the shetland yarn from Jamieson and Smith but this time I have used an undyed yarn in the natural moorit tone – which is a brown colour. I am really thrilled with how this yarn looks and will be using this a lot more! It has such a beautiful tone and is so soft.

All her clothes are from organic cotton. The trousers and pinny are the from the fairtrade organic cotton range that I use regularly with my dolls, this time in the green and khaki colours and the dress is another print from Cloud9 with a lovely simple flower design.

I think these girls look sweet together, simple and summery.

Hopefully I will be able to work on a few more dolls over the next few weeks, but with holidays to Cornwall and the Lleyn peninsular planned I think I may be away enjoying myself too much.

Happy summer everyone!

For all those of you who are into their fashion, check out my sister’s blog fox and feather.

Her shop is going to be amazing. She is one super stylish multi-talented lady (you may remember she did all my graphics and designed my cutie bird logo).

So please do pop in and see what she is up too.

Well summer is almost upon us, midsummer’s day is only a few days away. The days are long and, as always, a bit rainy here in Wales – though the sun is just trying to peep through at the moment.

I love this time of year, late spring is so lush. My garden is flourishing, roses blooming, peas shooting up, my lemon balm is rampant. The amazing colours give me such inspiration.

And I have been doing a bit of sewing too. Two more 14″ girl dolls all ready to go all dressed in fresh spring colours. I’ve used two prints from Cloud9 fabrics, one of my very favourite designers and printed on organic cotton too.

Hennie is first, with lucious black hair – this is the fabulous yarn from Aragon yarns, spun from British Romney sheep wool. This yarn does tend to shed a little bit though, I must be honest. She is wearing a plain white dress with fuschia pink trousers and the pinny print is from the Beyond the Sea range from Cloud9.

And then Tessa. Her hair is another of my favourite yarns, which I always go on about – Shetland wool from Jamieson and Smith . The colours are just fantastic and it is one of those yarns that just gets softer and softer while still having lots of springy wildness. This time I’ve used a fab auburn colour, I do love my red-headed dolls!

Tessa is wearing a dress with another Cloud9 print, this time little birds from the My Happy Garden range. This is matched up with brown organic cotton trousers and a pale aqua pinnie.

These two will be going up in the shop later today.

And if you were wondering about the summer threads title, I’ve been doing a bit more shopping – this time I picked up some cute vintage cotton reels from my local Oxfam shop to add to my collection, I won’t be using these, just admiring. The colours are just gorgeous, expect to see a doll dressed in a similar colour combo soon!

How beautiful are these?

Well, I know it has been a while – my excuse is I’ve been working on custom orders and though I love working with my wonderful customers, it means I find it difficult to work on dolls for the shop.

So I’ve decided to take a break from custom orders for a few months and concentrate my efforts on the shop. And I’ve got loads of ideas for lovely dolls I want to create so can’t wait to get going. I have a whole stack of beautiful prints that are just crying out to be made up into cute outfits and I am going to be making a whole lot of clothes to sell too, so look out for those.

Finally though I have two cute little boys to go up in the shop. These little cuties are both just 12″. I am so pleased with how they have turned out. It really is difficult letting these two chaps go so I hope whoever gets them will love them as much as I do.

Firstly, Elliot, with his fluffy brown hair. He has blush tone skin and brown eyes and is quite a serious little guy. I’ve been wanting to use this beautiful subtle Cake Rock Beach print (from the fantastic Purl Soho) for years and I love how it goes with the navy velour.

And this is Danny with his rather wild ginger hair. I have a new supplier for my mohair and this is much brighter than the last lot of ginger mohair I had, but I think it looks great, so bright and cheerful. Danny has the pale skin tone and clear blue eyes. He may look like butter wouldn’t melt, but this is one cheeky chappy. The print for all you fabric queens is Wild Thyme by Carolyn Gavin for P&B Textiles.

These two little guys will be up in the shop later today hopefully, and I promise there will be much more to come soon.

I’ve been working on the pattern for my mini bunting dolls and come up with this cute star version, just in time for Christmas. I’ve got a few ready to go in the shop and if they prove popular I may have to whip up a few more. They are still 6″ like the standard mini bunting dolls though I must admit I think they are far cuter than the standard ones – maybe I’ll just stick with the stars! I can just see them poking out of the top of a stocking, or even on the tree.

I have also been discovering the limitations of my very amateurish photography skills. These dark winter days are making things very difficult for trying to shoot in natural light, I may have to try to rig up some kind of lighting as I can’t just wait for sunny days all the time. I didn’t realise I was going to have to learn so much about photography as well as doll making!

And I’m currently working on two 16″ dolls too, and I’m afraid these will be my last ones before Christmas. Hopefully I will have them in the shop by Wednesday so I’d better get working. I’ve been a little inspired a book I have been reading recently, so I’ll have to see if anyone can spot the very tenuous link – I’m not giving anymore clues than that.

I’m back!

Sorry, I’ve totally neglected the blog.

Things have been a bit crazy here, we were away for a while and then the camera decided to go on the blink, I really need to get myself a spare!

Anyway, it is back to business as usual again now. I have two dolls all ready to list this evening, both 14″ one boy and one girl. I haven’t finished sorting out the photos yet, so you are all going to have to wait a little for those.

There will probably only be a few more dolls before Christmas now as I still have a few custom orders to finish. I’m still getting enquiries about Christmas orders, but I’m afraid it is too late now.

Next year I hope to be a lot more organised for Christmas, I was woefully unprepared this year, but I have learnt a lot!

I’m not finding much time to do crafting just for me at the moment, but as they say “all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy”, or in my case just a little bored, so I’ve been working on a couple of other projects this week too, all for me, me, me!!

I had some lovely Istex Lett Lopi yarn in my stash that my sister brought me back from Iceland and as my slippers have just started to fall apart, I thought I would knit myself some replacements. It is a really simple pattern called Nola’s Slippers which you can find here on the patterns page, or here on Ravelry if you are a member.

And this is how mine are looking at the moment

Nola Slippers

They are knitting up really quickly, so hopefully by the end of the weekend I will have some snuggly slippers. The yarn is just fantastic. I do like the way single ply yarns look. It is a bit scratchy, but hopefully that means they will be lovely, hard-wearing and snuggly to keep my little toes warm this winter.

And as I am not the tidiest of workers (ahem) and my workspace gets a little messy, I also made this cute little fabric box to sit on my worktop and put all my scraps in. It is working a treat! The fabric is a japanese linen blend by Cosmo that my lovely other half bought as a little pressie from Purl Soho, possibly my very favourite fabric shop. Maybe I will get to go there one day!

Cloth box

Now I can just dump all my odds and ends of fabric in there to sort out at a later date. Brilliant. I am planning on making another to put my notions in.

And of course I have been working on a few dolls. I do think these little ladies are a couple of stunners, but then I guess I would say that!

I’ve been experimenting again with different ways of doing the wigs and have come to the conclusion that it is just a jolly labour intensive job however you do it.

So here is Eva, looking rather bashful.

Her hair is the fantastic Jameison and Smith Shetland wool that I have been using a lot. I just love this yarn, the colours are wonderful and it gets so soft with time. And I love being able to support a traditional British industry. This time I have used a honey coloured yarn in a shoulder length style.

Eva is wearing a little dress made from Michael Miller Love Birds fabric, with some exceedingly cute red and orange striped leggings underneath and over the top a pinny of off-white organic cotton which has a pretty embroidered pattern.

And here is her friend Celeste ( I’ve been listening to Kirsty MacColl too much I think).

Celeste 16" waldorf inspired doll

Celeste has the same gorgeous Romney yarn that I used for Rebecca’s hair. She is wearing a plain white dress with a vintage crochet lace trim, blue organic cotton trousers underneath and over the top a pinny of gorgeous Liberty Tana Lawn. This print is Phoebe.

I was trying to go a bit more autumnal with my colours, but this outfit just seemed to fit Celeste perfectly. I always try to choose the outfit to match the doll and I love seeing how my dolls evolve and come to life.

I’ll be adding Eva and Celeste to my shop later today hopefully.

Well, it is a lovely warm weekend here (amazing for October!) so hopefully I will be able to get outside later and get some more inspiration for my next batch of dolls.
